Gira Sindical Visita el Sur de California
Del 16 al 31 de marzo, Unión del Barrio, International Action Center, y US-Cuba Labor Exchange organizaron una Gira Sindical através de 7 estados, visitando a 11 ciudades en los Estados Unidos. Esta gira fue compuesta por la Federación Sindical Mundial (FSM) Región América representada por Gilda Chacon Bravo, y el Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas representado por Humberto Montes de Oca y Pipino Cuevas y el Intercambio Laboral EEUU-Cuba representado por Ignacio Meneses. Un tercer sindicato, Sección VIII del la Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE), representado por Jorge Cázares Torres, se le negó la visa por el gobierno de Estados Unidos por no cumplir con el requisito de salario y no logró participar en la gira.
La gira tuvo como objetivo central realizar encuentros y reuniones con trabajadores- sean sindicalizados o no- para presentar las luchas de los y las trabajadores/as en el continente Latinoamericano (Nuestra América) y exponer el impacto negativo que han tenido las políticas neo-liberales capitalista y su impacto a trabajadores, y cómo las distintas organizaciones sindicales han enfrentado la crisis económica de ese modelo económico.
Entre lo discutido se presentó cómo el plan económico conocido como La Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblo de Nuestra América-Tratado de Comercio entre los Pueblos (ALBA-TCP) que ha creado programas sociales en beneficio de las grandes mayorías obreras y campesinas en Latinoamérica. Esta gira también invito a trabajadores norte de la frontera- impuesta por el imperio- a conocer el Encuentro Sindicales de Nuestra América (ESNA) que tiene como objetivo complementar esfuerzos, unir luchas, y solidarizarse con la acción coordinada de las organizaciones obreras y campesinas a través del continente. El ESNA, en su IV edición, se realizará este año (2011) en Managua Nicaragua a finales de agosto.
La Gira Sindical pasó por las ciudades de San Diego y Los Angeles los días 24 al 27. En este transcurso se realizó encuentros con sindicatos, consejos sindicales, organizaciones y coaliciones en pro de los derechos de migrantes. En particular la gira participó en una clase de Estudios Chicanos en el Colegio Comunitario de San Diego, un foro comunitario en el World Beat Center organizado por Unión del Barrio y International Action Center, reunión con la dirigencia del Consejo de Sindical de los Condados de San Diego e Imperial, reunion con el personal de la organización pro-migrante Comité Servicio de Amigos Americanos (AFSC-San Diego), participación en la Conferencia de la Coalición de Inmigración del Sur de California, recepción por parte de Unión del Barrio en el Centro Cultural Francisco Villa, reunion con la organización Vamos Unidos, recepción con el International Action Center en Los Angeles, reunion con el Sindicato de Maestro de Los Angeles (UTLA) y Workers United en Los Angeles.
Una importante reunión se realizó con la Congresista Maxine Waters de Los Angeles con el proposito de ver la posibilidad de visitar a Gerardo Hernande, uno, de los 5 cubanos injustamente encarcelado en carcel de EEUU, dado a que su talentoso y distinguido abogado Leonard Weinglass habia fallecido el 23 de marzo.
La gira logró intercambiar con 9 agrupaciones en el Sur de California, y logró observar una mega marcha Sindical en la ciudad de Los Angeles. De estas conversaciones e intercambios se pudo presentar los proyectos como el ALBA y el ESNA que orientan a las organizaciones obreras a buscar la unidad, desarrollar planes de acción unitaria e iniciar miras hacia las propuestas que han logrado mejorar las condiciones de vida para los y las trabajadores en áreas de salud, educación, deporte, vivienda, seguridad alimenticia, entre otra obras sociales.
En general, de estas reuniones se propuso la necesidad de movilizar para el 1º de mayo, Día Internacional de los y las Trabajadores/as como acción que lleve a la unidad obrera para dar respuesta a la crisis del capitalismo y buscar solución en miras hacia el sur del continente de Nuestra América con el ALBA y el ESNA.

Labor Tour Visits Southern California
From the 16th thru the 31st of march, Unión del Barrio, the International Action Center and the US-Cuba Labor Exchange organized a US labor tour thru 7 states, visiting 11 cities in the United States. This tour was composed of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) Americas Region, represented by Gilda Chacon Bravo, and the Mexican Electrical Workers, represented by Humberto Montes de Oca and Pipino Cuevas, and the US-Cuba Labor Exchange represented by Ignacio Meneses. A third labor union, Section VIII of the National Steering Committee of Education Workers (CNTE), represented by Jorge Cázares Torres, was unable to join the planned tour due to his visa being denied by the discriminatory U.S. visa policy which indicated that Jorge did not make enough money to qualify for a visa.
The tour had as its primary objective to bring together workers- unionized or not- to exchange experiences on the challenges confronting working people throughout the continent. The goal was to measure the impacts of the current capitalist neo-liberal model on workers, and how each sector has confronted the challenges during a time of economic crisis.
Among points of discussion was the presentation of the emerging economic alternative known as the Bolivarian Alliance for the People’s of Nuestra América-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), which has created social programs that benefit the large majority of workers throughout member nations and beyond. This tour also invited workers north of the imperialist imposed border to familiarize themselves with the Trade Union Meeting of Our America (ESNA), which has as its primary goal to unite workers and compliment efforts, unite struggles and unite in solidarity with coordinated actions. The ESNA, in its IV edition, will take place this year in the capital city of Managua Nicaragua during the final days in August.
The labor tour visited San Diego and Los Angeles between the 24th and 27th of march. During these days the international guests were able to meet with individual unions, Labor Councils, organizations and coalitions that struggle for the defense of migrant workers rights. Specifically there was a community forum held at the World Beat Center organized by Unión del Barrio and the International Action Center, meeting with the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council leadership, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), participation at the Southern California Immigration Coalition Conference, Vamos Unidos, meeting with United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), IAC, and with Workers United in Los Angeles.
An important part of the trip was a meeting with Congresswoman Maxine Waters from Los Angeles, to explore the possibility to have Gilda Chacon Bravo visit Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Cuban 5 imprisoned in California, given the recent passing of his talented and distinguished lawyer Leonard Weinglass on March 23rd.
The tour achieved an exchange with 9 different labor/worker’s gathering in the Southern California area and was able to experience one of the largest labor marches in the city of Los Angeles in recent history. From these exchanges the presenters were able to inform on the ALBA and ESNA process which is uniting workers organizations and developing coordinated actions, as well as developing projects that are improving the conditions and lives of workers in areas such as healthcare, education, sports, housing, food security among other social projects.
In general, these gatherings expressed the need to build May 1st International Worker’s Day events with the purpose to unite in response to the crisis of capitalism and seek to find solutions beyond capitalism with ALBA as an important points of reference for a worker’s based economy, and ESNA towards workers unity and action throughout Nuestra América.
