2012 Zapata March | In Honor and Memory of Ernesto Bustillos

Every year Unión del Barrio and MEChA de SDSU, organize a march in April to commemorate the legacy of Emiliano Zapata and remember what he represented not only to the people in Mexico, but to the common struggle of human rights everywhere under the slogan, ¡Tierra y Libertad! (Land and Freedom!)

This year we will organize around the theme: Here We Are, Here to Stay: We Exist and We Resist!: STOP!: Gentrification, Vehicle Impounding and Limiting AB540 Students.

In addition, due to the recent passing of our founder, Ernesto Bustillos, we will honor him within this march as a testament of his significance to our organization and our movement.

As students and organizers in our community, we understand the importance of bridging the university with the surrounding community to be able to unite for the betterment of our working class people.  In many San Diego communities (i.e. Logan, Sherman, Shelltown), gentrification is pushing out our working class gente from their homes and communities into places where they will be paying more.  This causes instability in our families economically, socially, emotionally, and culturally.

In addition, vehicle impounding has become a lucrative business for many tow companies and the city of San Diego, while harming its residents.  Therefore, many families have lost their means of transportation for daily activities (i.e. school, work, family appointments).

Unfortunately, at San Diego State University a percentage of our students are also being targeted.  For the students that fall under the label of AB540 (undocumented students), they are not allowed the same access to resources as everyone else, even though they pay the same tuition or more.

For all these reasons we are calling for working class people to join us on April 14, 2012, at 2pm (right after the ARE Conference) at JFK Park to march through the streets together as one; to bring to light these and other issues that must be resolved.

The land belongs to those that work it!

Ernesto Bustillos

August 25, 1990, Chicano Moratorium 20th Anniversary Event

We are united today to demand union jobs and union wages. We are tired of working for slave wages and in slave-like conditions. We demand housing and healthcare for all. It is a damn crime to allow people to exist without a home or live in crowded run-down conditions. We are gathered here to demand an end to police and migra terror of our community. The real criminals are the rich capitalists and the bosses who live off the sweat and blood of la Raza.

We are also here united to demand quality education for our people. We demand an education which teaches our true history, our culture and provides the skills necessary for self-determination. We demand an end to government drug importation into our communities. The so-called war on drugs is nothing but a cover used to crimininzlise our youth and keep our communities under military occupation….Today we demand an end to U.S. imperialism.
U.S. out of Central America!
U.S. out of Latin America!
U.S. out of North America!
U.S. out of Africa!
U.S. out of Asia!
U.S. out of the Middle East!

All Power to the people! Our war is here in Aztlán!

Camaradas, compañeras and compañeros, we understand that to demand justice is not enough! We must be prepared to struggle, and to sacrifice. Thinking about what needs to be done is not enough. Talking about what needs to be done is not enough. We must put our thoughts and our words into action!
¡Que viva la Raza!
¡Que Zapata!
¡Que viva Villa!
¡Que viva Marti!
¡Que viva Sandino!
¡Hasta la Victoria Siempre!
¡VENCEREMOS!
