1º de mayo de 2011

Este primero de mayo Unión del Barrio saldrá a las calles para ser parte de los miles de millones de seres humanos que, concientes de su carácter de trabajadores, reconocen y celebran el 1º de mayo, por crear un mundo sin amos y sin explotadores. El Día Internacional de los Trabajadores representa la concentración de luchas reivindicativas por el ser humano de ser reconocido como tal, como ser humano; y que esa lucha reivindicativa tiene por base el principio del respeto al trabajo!

Estamos de acuerdo con la Federación Sindical Mundial cuando dice que, “celebramos el Primero de Mayo de 2011 en un período crucial. En un período de imperialismo agresivo, políticas anti-laborales y en un momento en el que el sistema capitalista mundial está en una crisis económica profunda y multifacética del propio sistema. Esta crisis se expresa en todos los sectores: en la economía, el medio ambiente, la calidad de vida, la cultura y el cambio climático. Las crisis están en el ADN del capitalismo y por esta razón aparecen una y otra vez. Es imposible para el capitalismo resolver los problemas de los pueblos del mundo.” Y es por esta razón que Unión del Barrio lucha y seguirá luchando por concientizar, unir y tomar acción como pueblo trabajador para crear una economía alternativa a la del capitalismo.

Nuestro objetivo este 1º de mayo es de orientar nuestra lucha como trabajadores y trabajadoras, como estudiantes, maestros, profesionistas, mujeres, desempleados, indocumentados y jóvenes, hacia la lucha por confrontar la actual ofensiva de los capitalistas y sus gobiernos, y fortalecer la unidad con conciencia.

Hoy, hace ya 122 años desde la primera celebración de este día obrero mundial, las y los trabajadores luchamos en un contexto donde el imperio, liderado por el Presidente Barak Obama- recipiente del premio Nobel de la Paz de 2009-utiliza la estrategia de la guerra perpetua como base ideológica para transferir la crisis de un lado para otro e intentar de superar la crisis del capitalismo. Obama, quien hizo su carrera política en Chicago, ciudad donde la masacre de obreros en 1886 dieran la razón para celebrar este día internacional de las y los trabajadores y quienes lucharon por la jornada de 8 horas, el derecho a sindicalizarse, y por el derecho a la negociación de contratos colectivos, es quien lidera la ofensiva anti-obrera.

Ya la crisis no tiene salida dentro del capitalismo, vemos como los recortes a la educación, salud, vivienda, cuidado infantil, seguridad alimenticia, y demás beneficios sociales van en aumento. Lo único que ofrece este sistema bárbaro es militarismo, bombardeos, guerras genocidas de ocupación, asesinatos, redadas y represión generalizada. Unión del Barrio rechaza esto y lucha, desde nuestras trincheras, sea en Oxnard, Los Angeles, o San Diego con un mensaje anti-imperialista, por los derechos de los trabajadores y por el socialismo.

Hoy marcharemos, caminaremos, dialogaremos con el pueblo para avanzar la unidad con conciencia y crear un movimiento capaz de hacer los cambios que urgentemente necesitamos para vivir con felicidad.

The Struggle for Unity is the Struggle for Worker’s Consciousness for a World without Capitalism

This may 1st, Unión del Barrio will take to the streets and join the billions of people, who, conscious of their class character, recognize and celebrate may 1st and who struggle towards building a world without slave masters and without exploiters. International Worker’s Day represents the concentration of humanities basic struggle to be recognized as workers and have our work respected.

We agree completely with the World Federation of Trade Unions when they declare, “We honor and celebrate May Day 2011 at a crucial period. At a period of aggressive imperialism, anti-labor policies, and at a time when the global capitalist system is in a deep and multifaceted economic crisis of the system itself. This crisis is expressed in all sectors: in the economy, the environment, the quality of life, culture and climate change. Crises are in the DNA of capitalism and for this reason they come over and over again. It is impossible for capitalism to solve the problems of the peoples of the world.” And it is for this reason that Unión del Barrio has struggled, and will continue to struggle, to raise consciousness, build unity and take action, towards creating an alternative economy without capitalism.

Our objective, this may 1st, is to guide our understanding as workers, women, students, teachers, professionals, unemployed, undocumented and as youth, towards confronting the capitalist offensive and its governments, reinforcing our commitment towards principled unity with consciousness.

Today, more than 122 years since the first international workers day celebration, we are confronted by an empire, led by President Barak Obama (Nobel Peace Prize recipient of 2009), who utilizes a strategy of perpetual and expanded warfare as the ideological basis for transferring the capitalist crisis from one place to another. Obama, who’s political career was forged in the city where the historic 1886 Haymarket general strike – the reference point for celebrating International Worker’s Day, and the struggle that gave rise to the 8 hour work day, the right to unionize and the right to collective bargaining- is the person who is at the head of the anti-worker offensive.

We affirm that capitalism can not resolve its inherit contradictions; as we are witness to increased cuts in areas of education, public healthcare, childcare, food security, and other social services. The only thing that this barbaric economic model offers humanity is militarism, bombings, genocidal wars of occupation, assassinations, immigration raids, and general repression. Unión del Barrio rejects this future and is committed to struggle, from within our current areas of influence; in Oxnard, Los Angeles and San Digo, against imperialism, for the rights of all workers, and for Socialism.

Today, we march, we walk, we dialogue with our people to advance the necessary unity with consciousnesses that will build a movement capable of offering the necessary change that will bring a life with happiness to all working people.

100 Years of International Working Women’s Day: United For a World Without Capitalism

March 8th marks International Working Women’s Day, a date celebrated by many peoples of the world.  It is a major global celebration that acknowledges the economic, political and social achievements of women and the just demands for equality, justice and dignity. The first celebration of International Working Women’s Day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th Century to commemorate the valiant struggle of women workers in the garment industry of New York City, during a period of rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions.

Women are workers, educators, amas de casa, health care advocates, organizers, students, compañeras; our aspirations are filled with a rebellious nature, our dreams are potent with deep convictions, our voices cry out for a new and better world, where we can build radical ideologies and expand new ones.  We know that we will face the persistent threat of oppression and exploitation. It is precisely because of that, that women have always been and are now at the forefront of combating these violent conditions. That is what makes a revolutionary woman that much more needed in the struggle to build a socialist society where we can combat violence and ensure that solidarity flourishes.

Compañeras y compañeros, we thank you for your renewed and strengthened commitment to resist and struggle against exploitation and oppression.  Only both as committed and united militantes can we attain National Liberation.

A 100 Años del Día Internacional de la Mujer Trabajadora: Unidas Por un Mundo Sin Capitalismo

El Día Internacional de la Mujer Trabajadora es celebrado en la mayoría de los países a través del mundo el día 8 de marzo de cada año.  Es una celebración importante por los logros económicos, políticos y sociales de las mujeres.  La idea de tener un día internacional de la mujer trabajadora fue avanzada a finales del siglo 20 en medio de la rápida industrialización global y una expansión económica que condujo a protestas por las condiciones de trabajo
Como obreras, amas de casa, educadoras, precursoras de atención medica, organizadoras, estudiantes, compañeras y compañeros, camaradas, llenos de una naturaleza en rebeldía, poderosas con fuertes justificaciones, voces que avanzan la ideología de la clase trabajadora, de avanzada y en expansión de otras nuevas, sabemos que siempre existirán en forma persistente nuevas condiciones de explotación y represión y tenemos que estar al frente para poder combatirlas.  Esto es lo que nos hace mujeres revolucionarias tan necesitadas en una sociedad socialista donde todos florecemos.

Compañeras y compañeros, les damos las gracias por vuestro renovado y fuerte compromiso de resistir y luchar en contra de la explotación y la opresión.  Solamente como militantes unidos y comprometidos podemos conquistar la liberación nacional.

Unión del Barrio expresses our condemnation of today’s shooting in Tucson Arizona, where Jared Loughner shot U.S. Congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords and at least a dozen other people, including one 9-year-old girl and a U.S. Federal Judge. We lament this terrible incident, and extend our condolences to the families of all the victims.

Yet, a terrible incident like this must not only be lamented, but also exposed at its source. Sadly, we are not surprised that this had happened, since this event must be considered as part of the inevitable extension of the very same climate of violence and hatred that has been legislated upon within the U.S. Congress, in many State legislatures (particularly in Arizona), and saturates most main stream media outlets. The circulation of so much poison inevitably returns to those that produce it.

The violence that today manifested itself in the deaths of a federal judge, a congressional aide, and a 9 year old child, among others, is nothing less than the direct domestic manifestation of what the U.S. government has been doing for decades: advancing imperialist aggression around the world through wars of occupation; financing and providing logistical support for a genocidal “war against drugs” in México; promoting an escalation of a culture of violence sown by U.S. legislators over many years; and a material expression of the reactionary/ right-wing fanaticism that promotes the militarization of society through the establishment of a police state and the increased militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border region.

To their madness we must respond – Otro Mundo Es Posible (Another World Is Possible).

Unión del Barrio condena el tiroteo del día de hoy en Tucson, Arizona, donde  Jared Loughner abrió fuego en contra de la congresista Gabrielle Giffords y al menos una docena de otras personas, incluyendo a una niña de 9 años y a un juez federal.  Lamentamos este terrible incidente, y extendemos nuestras condolencias a las familias de todas las victimas.

Sin embargo, un terrible incidente como este no sólo se tiene que lamentar, pero se tienen que exponer sus causales.   Tristemente, no estamos sorprendidos que esto haya pasado, ya que este evento debe ser considerado como una inevitable extensión del clima de violencia y odio que ha sido legislado desde el Congreso de los EEUU y muchas legislaturas estatales (particularmente en Arizona) saturando los medios de comunicación.  La circulación de tanto veneno inevitablemente regresa a los que la producen.

La violencia que hoy se ha manifestado en la muerte de un juez federal, un asistente de la congresista, y una niña de 9 años, entre otros, es nada más y nada menos que la directa manifestación domestica de lo que el Congreso de los EEUU a estado haciendo por décadas: incrementar las agresiones imperialistas alrededor del mundo a través de guerras de ocupación, financiando y proveyendo apoyo logístico para una genocida “guerra en contra de las drogas” en México; promoviendo una escalada de la cultura de la violencia sembrada por los legisladores estadounidenses en los últimos años; y la expresión material del fanatismo reaccionario/derechista que promueve la militarización de la sociedad con el establecimiento de un estado policial y con el incremento de la militarización en la región fronteriza EEUU-México.

A esta locura tenemos que responder – ¡Otro mundo es posible!

To supporters, progressives, leftists and the community in general,

On Friday September 24, a series of FBI raids were carried out throughout the United States. These raids targeted organizations with a clear anti-war, anti-imperialist, pro-peace position against U.S. foreign and domestic policy; a growing tendency of our time. We must be clear that this signals the coming of a more intense fascist state. It signals the coming of the persecution of organizations and individuals who oppose the current capitalist order.

Unión del Barrio condemns the raids and their purpose; which was to confuse, intimidate and instill fear in our community and in our movements.  We reject that intimidation and terror.

We have seen, been victims, and have witnessed these types of attacks before. We have been face to face with this fascism and are keenly aware of its reach; we know what it is to have members of our families taken by federal agents in the middle of the night or early mornings; we are aware of the empireís ability to suspend “constitutional, civil or democratic” rights; and we’ve seen the empire’s inhumanity, as it kills and maims people at the hands of its police-migra-military force against the non-white world. We are aware and assume our responsibility to struggle against it wherever it may appear.

Today the role, responsibility and duty of every revolutionary, progressive and those that call themselves leftists, must be to halt this drive to open fascism both within the political borders of the United States and abroad.  As we listen and observe the UN General Assembly speeches and discussions, it becomes clear that the possibility of nuclear war, with clear colonial ambitions is becoming more pronounced. A war that if carried out, whether by Israel or the United States against Irán, will undoubtedly alter the very possibility of life on this planet.

Today, the need for workers/class unity is ever more clear.  The need for a clearly anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist social movement for our basic rights depends upon us. We must be aware that the time to join the correct side of humanity, and leave behind the irrational, unsustainable, egocentric “American Dream,” is now! This “American Dream” has been, and continues to be a Human Rights nightmare the world over.

We invite, all who are willing to build a resistance to repression, war and occupation, to unite with the Manifesto of Caracas and build towards a continental day of action in your area on December 10th, International Human Rights Day; for Human Rights and Socialism, united we win!

La Raza de Los Angeles se levanta en protesta contra el asesinato de un obrero Guatemalteco por el Departamente de Policía de Los Angeles

Manuel Jamines Xum, un obrero de 37 años de edad, de descendencia maya, padre de tres hijos fue acribillado por un oficial del Departamento de policía de Los Angeles el pasado 5 de septiembre. De acuerdo a la policía, Jamines supuestamente amenazo a un oficial con un cuchillo, y dijeron que se le ordeno en ingles como en español de dejar el cuchillo. Sin embargo testigos han declarado que Jamines no tenía ningún cuchillo y además conocidos de Jamines declaran que Manuel hablaba K’iche, idioma Maya de la región de Centro America.

Unión del Barrio se ha sumado al reclamo por la justicia de esta comunidad. Lamentablemente no ha sido la única instancia de nuestro reclamo por justicia para los familiares de víctimas brutalmente acribillados por el terror de la policía. Denunciamos el hecho que los policías sean quienes se auto-investigan en un proceso burocrático, sin transparencia y a espaldas de las comunidades. Históricamente hemos exigido que este tipo de abuso sea investigado por un tribunal independiente y popular (por miembros de la comunidad), que tengan la autoridad de investigar los hechos y de llamar a testigos. Hemos exigido que los culpables sean juzgados por estos tribunales populares. Y hemos exigido pleno control comunitario de la policía. Planteamos la idea que la policía debería rendir cuentas al pueblo, y no a las instituciones que reprimen y sirven a los intereses de los ricos.

A través de los territorios ocupados Las agencias policíacas nos están asesinando en números sin precedente. Dos días antes de esta ultima balacera por las autoridades policíacas, en la ciudad de Seattle en el estado de Washington un indígena con el nombre de John Williams, fue acribillado por un agente de policía. Williams, quien era sordo, no respondió a los llamados de la policía para soltar una navaja que lo usaba como parte de su trabajo como escultor. En Oakland, el caso de Oscar Grant, asesinado por la policía de transito, culpables por homicidio involuntario, aunque las cámaras claramente mostraron un asesinato en sangre fría. En la frontera, los casos de Anastasio Hernández y Sergio Adrián Hernández, los dos asesinados por la patrulla fronteriza el ultimo mes de mayo.

Sabemos lo que es necesario para defender a nuestra comunidad; son Comités de Defensa del Barrio.
Ahora, mas que nunca, es importante que Unión del Barrio, organizaciones revolucionarias y progresistas, así como individuos tenemos que estar con nuestro pueblo en las calles, tomando acción.

Raza rebellion in Los Angeles in protest of Guatemalan worker Murdered by LAPD

Manuel Jamines Xum, a Mayan worker and father of three, was murdered by LAPD on Sunday September 5th, after supposedly threatening police with a pocket knife. However, witnesses of the murder say that Manuel was not armed and that police barked orders at him in English. LAPD claim they issued orders to him in Spanish, yet Manuel spoke K’iche, a Mayan language spoken throughout Central America.

Unión del Barrio has joined the communities demand for justice not only in this case, but in all the instances of police terror directed towards our people; police investigating themselves is not and will never be justice. Historically we have demanded that independent, community based, tribunals be established to investigate these and other acts of police abuse. We demand that these murderers be put on trial for their crimes. And demand full community control of the police. We say that the police must be accountable to the people, not the institution of repression that only serves the interest of the rich.

The police are killing us in record numbers throughout the occupied territories! In Seattle a Native American deaf man was killed because he could not hear the cops yelling at him to drop his knife, a tool he used for his wood carvings for work. In Oakland, there was Oscar Grant, murdered by police officers who were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, a less serious crime than what the cameras as the scene recorded: cold blooded murder. At the US-Mexico border we have Anastasio Hernández, and Sergio Adrian Hernández both murder by Border Patrol.

We know what is necessary to defend our neighborhoods and our people is organization, Barrio/community defense committees. Now, more than ever, it is important for us as Unión del Barrio, other revolutionary and progressive people and organizations to be with the people in the streets with our brothers and sisters in action.
