\"\"At 1:04 am on Saturday, September 29, 2018, a heart stopped beating, and we lost the larger-than-life comrade we will always remember as compa Pablo Aceves.<\/p>\n

Paul James Aceves was born in San Diego on December 2, 1967. He attended Bonita Vista High School, he was an athlete and enjoyed fishing. It was as a young student that he found what would be his calling – to dedicate his life to the revolutionary struggle for the liberation of his people of Nuestra Am\u00e9rica.<\/p>\n

Pablo was 17 years old when in the spring of 1985 he attended a protest of the shooting of Humberto Carrillo at the hands of the Border Patrol. The event that took place that day was organized by Uni\u00f3n del Barrio, and it was at that\u00a0demonstration that Pablo began his decades of political life and leadership within our organization.<\/p>\n

\"\"As a member of Uni\u00f3n del Barrio, Pablo developed excellent organizing and speaking skills, and within a few years he became one of our most committed members. As a result of his tremendous speaking skills and keen political intellect, Pablo went on to become an important pillar of the organization. With 31 years of uninterrupted participation within the ranks of Uni\u00f3n del Barrio, Pablo played a central role in hundreds of rallies, mass demonstrations, political education sessions, debates, interviews, and other consciousness raising activities throughout Aztlan. Of course due in part to his large physical stature, many members of the organization and the broader community looked up to this man, but Pablo was primarily admired for his proven commitment, advanced political skills, and uncompromising devotion to revolutionary struggle. Pablo was truly a comrade who was worthy of emulation.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Throughout his decades of political life, Pablo occupied multiple leading roles. He was elected President and Coordinator of a long list of local, regional, and national projects and coalitions, among them the Raza Rights Coalition in San Diego, the National Chicano Moratorium Committee, and the Raza Press and Media Association. Internally within Uni\u00f3n del Barrio, Pablo was elected to the “Mesa Directiva” of Uni\u00f3n del Barrio during the 1990s when this was the leading organizational body of the organization, before our first Congreso in 1997 when we established the first Comit\u00e9 Central. Pablo was then elected to serve on the Comit\u00e9 Central. Pablo also served as the Secretario Pol\u00edtico of Base Emiliano Zapata, and at the time of his death he was the Secretario Pol\u00edtico of Base Celia S\u00e1nchez in San Diego.<\/p>\n

Pablo’s broad influence was made clear during the weeks after news of his death circulated online.\u00a0Pablo\u2019s passing was grieved by hundreds of activists because he spent years building relationships with people across cities, generations, and borders, relationships we should all aspire to build with one another. He was a motivator to many, both in person and online. His great humanity also connected him to people outside of his activism. Precisely because\u00a0of these relationships, his viewing and funeral were attended by more activists than are seen at many marches.<\/p>\n

Pablo was a political thinker and a writer. He penned dozens of articles for \u00a1La Verdad!<\/em> newspaper and the prison newsletter Las Calles y la Torcida. <\/em>Pablo also authored several\u00a0pamphlets, and in 1999 La Verdad Publications printed his book titled Stolen Revolution<\/em>. On the dedication page of his book, Pablo chose these words:<\/p>\n

\"\"This book is dedicated to Uni\u00f3n del Barrio and to the freedom fighters of all sectors of our gente north and south of la frontera falsa<\/em> who are struggling for a M\u00e9xico of workers and campesinos. It is dedicated to every man, woman, and child who has struggled for freedom and for the only true democracy that can exist in the world – one that overthrows capitalism, colonialism, and imperialism and puts the means of production in the hands of the vast majority of the people on the planet – by any means necessary…<\/p>\n

Each one of us has to decide which side he or she is on… the side of imperialist violence or armed-revolutionary struggle; on the side of violence that oppresses, or violence that liberates… At minimum, it is our duty to show support and solidarity to the liberation struggles of oppressed people, especially those who courageously have taken up arms in defense of dignity and freedom.<\/p>\n

Pablo was an tireless liberation\u00a0fighter and a dear friend to hundreds of people. In the face of oppression and reactionary threats he was fearless and intense. He was never one to back down from a fight, political or otherwise. Among is family, friends and comrades he was warm and incredibly human.\u00a0In sum, compa Pablo was our comrade\u2026 And he was a revolutionary of our times. We miss him terribly.<\/p>\n

Como Secretario General de Uni\u00f3n del Barrio me corresponde el triste deber de despedir a nombre de toda la militancia de la organizaci\u00f3n a nuestro querido camarada y amigo Pablo Aceves.<\/p>\n

Pablo fue un hombre de extraordinarias condiciones humanas, de firmes convicciones, generoso y estricto en los deberes y responsabilidades adquiridas.<\/p>\n

Conoc\u00ed a Pablo a comienzos de la \u00e9poca de los noventas, como muchos de nosotros lo conocimos. Por supuesto que fue durante un evento pol\u00edtico que se llevaba a cabo en el centro de la ciudad de San Diego. \u00c9l era, en ese evento pol\u00edtico, el que recib\u00eda a los asistentes en la puerta del lugar. All\u00ed fue donde por primera vez estreche la mano de Pablo. Desde esa ocasi\u00f3n nos seguimos estrechando la mano a lo largo de 28 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

Lo conocimos en aquellos tiempos de juventud. En tiempos dif\u00edciles para el pueblo al que Pablo defend\u00eda a capa y espada. Eran los a\u00f1os donde se destacaban los ataques a nuestras comunidades. Tiempos en que la migra y la polic\u00eda asediaba a nuestros barrios. Pablo, en esos a\u00f1os y con esas condiciones, se fue configurando como un indiscutible l\u00edder de Uni\u00f3n del Barrio y de nuestro pueblo: El pueblo mexicano-latinoamericano.<\/p>\n

Pablo fue, es, un hombre inteligente y leal. Durante 31 a\u00f1os en que fue militante activo de Uni\u00f3n del Barrio, se entreg\u00f3 a la lucha con amor, con justicia y humanidad y, como el mismo dec\u00eda y cito aqu\u00ed sus propias palabras:<\/p>\n

No se trata aqu\u00ed de ser perfecto. Se trata de ser mejor y esforzarse para ser lo que las masas necesitan que seamos, estemos donde estemos. Se trata de mejorarnos a nosotros mismos, pero no de abandonar al pueblo. Se trata de estar listos para la lucha y hacer lo que la lucha exige.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pablo cumpl\u00eda d\u00eda a d\u00eda lo que \u00e9l mismo dec\u00eda que hab\u00eda que hacer.<\/p>\n

Dedic\u00f3 la mayor parte de su vida a la organizaci\u00f3n y al Movimiento que tanto amo. Hizo, con su pu\u00f1o en alto y su inconfundible voz, elementos importantes e inequ\u00edvocos en todos los eventos pol\u00edticos, marchas, demostraciones y protestas en las que se encontraba presente.<\/p>\n

Su esp\u00edritu de lucha, a medida que avanzaba en el d\u00eda a d\u00eda en la lucha por la autodeterminaci\u00f3n, la justicia y la libertad, motivo a mucha gente. Nunca dio un instante de tregua, nunca cedi\u00f3 hasta su \u00faltimo d\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Hombre con ideales y principios pol\u00edticos inquebrantables. Que no soportaba para nada la injusticia social. Un luchador intransigente a favor de los pobres, los explotados y los oprimidos del mundo.<\/p>\n

Pablo fue sin lugar a dudas, una fuerza pol\u00edtica dentro de Uni\u00f3n del Barrio. Al momento de su partida era el militante m\u00e1s antiguo dentro de la organizaci\u00f3n. Con el paso de los a\u00f1os tuvo m\u00faltiples cargos y responsabilidades. Fue miembro del Comit\u00e9 Central de Uni\u00f3n del Barrio y pieza clave en las relaciones de nuestra organizaci\u00f3n con otras organizaciones pol\u00edticas de este y del otro lado de la frontera, la frontera falsa como \u00e9l la llamaba. Al momento de su ida ejerc\u00eda como Secretario Pol\u00edtico de la Base Celia S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n

Dem\u00e1s est\u00e1 decir que Uni\u00f3n del Barrio tomar\u00e1 el legado de Pablo y lo enarbolar\u00e1 para llevarlo en alto y transportarlo al ma\u00f1ana. Te lo prometemos Pablo: Que mientras haya un Unionista de pie, t\u00fa estar\u00e1s entre nosotros y por siempre.<\/p>\n

Pablo, quiero dedicarte una cita del dramaturgo y poeta alem\u00e1n Bertolt Brech. Estoy seguro que Bertolt no se molestar\u00e1 que te la dedique a ti, porque esta cita la escribi\u00f3 \u00e9l pensando en hombres como t\u00fa:<\/p>\n

Hay hombres que luchan un d\u00eda y son buenos.<\/p>\n

Hay otros que luchan un a\u00f1o y son mejores.<\/p>\n

Hay quienes luchan muchos a\u00f1os y son muy buenos.<\/p>\n

Pero hay los que luchan toda la vida: esos son los imprescindibles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pablo, camarada, amigo, hermano: has comenzado a caminar este nuevo sendero, pero vuelves y volver\u00e1s por todos los caminos y senderos convertido en cientos de hombres y mujeres.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>It is with great pain and a heavy heart that Uni\u00f3n del Barrio informs the Raza Liberation Movement and its supporters that we have lost a leader of our struggle. Pablo Aceves, a leading member of Uni\u00f3n del Barrio whose combative spirit would inspire all generations of unionistas, lost his last fight to a sudden medical emergency.<\/p>\n

Pablo committed 31 years of his life to the organization and to the movimiento he loved so dearly. He made his raised fist and booming voice unmistakable elements at every political event he attended. He was a person of unwavering political principles, and an uncompromisingly dedicated fighter on the side of the poor, the exploited, and the oppressed the world over.<\/p>\n

Pablo was an important political force within Uni\u00f3n del Barrio. At the time of his passing, he was the longest actively serving member within the organization. Over the years he fulfilled multiple roles, most notably as a member of the Central Committee. He was currently fulfilling the role of Political Secretary of Base Celia S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n

Pablo\u2019s spirit of struggle motivated movement people, and he advanced the struggle for raza self-determination and liberation everyday. He never relented, even until his last day. Suffering from severe chest pain while at work Friday morning, compa\u00f1ero Pablo passed away at 1:04 am Saturday morning after a long and difficult surgical procedure failed to stop his internal bleeding. Pablo was 50 years old.<\/p>\n

At the time of his passing, Pablo was surrounded by family, friends, and comrades. He will be terribly missed within the ranks of Uni\u00f3n del Barrio and within our liberation struggle. But he will live on, as we honor his legacy and his contributions to the raza struggle for Self-Determination, National Liberation, and Socialism.<\/p>\n

We intend to collectively honor comrade Pablo. As funeral arrangements are established, Uni\u00f3n del Barrio will announce the services.<\/p>\n

Pablo fue, sin duda alguna, una fuerza pol\u00edtica dentro de Uni\u00f3n del Barrio. En el momento de su fallecimiento, era el militante m\u00e1s antiguo dentro de la organizaci\u00f3n. Al paso de los a\u00f1os tuvo m\u00faltiples cargos. Fue miembro del Comit\u00e9 Central de Union del Barrio. Actualmente se encontraba efectuando el cargo de Secretario Pol\u00edtico de la Base Celia S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n

El esp\u00edritu combativo de Pablo motiv\u00f3 al pueblo en nuestro movimiento, y avanz\u00f3 la lucha por la liberaci\u00f3n y auto-determinaci\u00f3n de la raza. Hasta su ultimo d\u00eda, \u00e9l jam\u00e1s cedi\u00f3. Sufriendo de un dolor severo en el pecho cuando se encontraba trabajando el viernes por la ma\u00f1ana fue trasladado al hospital. El compa\u00f1ero Pablo falleci\u00f3 a la 1:04 am del d\u00eda\u00a0s\u00e1bado despu\u00e9s de una larga y dif\u00edcil cirug\u00eda que no pudo superar. Pablo ten\u00eda 50 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

En el momento de su fallecimiento, Pablo estuvo rodeado por su familia, amigos y camaradas. El ser\u00e1 profundamente extra\u00f1ado dentro de las filas de Uni\u00f3n del Barrio y dentro de nuestra lucha por la liberaci\u00f3n de nuestro pueblo. Vivir\u00e1 eternamente, honraremos su trayectoria y sus contribuciones a nuestra lucha por la auto-determinaci\u00f3n, nuestra Liberaci\u00f3n Nacional y por el Socialismo.<\/p>\n

Honraremos colectivamente a nuestro camarada Pablo. Como se vayan organizando los servicios f\u00fanebres, Uni\u00f3n del Barrio anunciara los detalles.<\/p>\n
