Uni\u00f3n del Barrio celebrates the recent release and return to Cuba of Gerardo Hern\u00e1ndez, Ram\u00f3n Labani\u00f1o, and Antonio Guerrero – the final three of the Cuban 5 which had been imprisoned in the United States since 1998 for their counterterrorism efforts in defense of Cuban sovereignty. Furthermore, we congratulate the Cuban 5 and the worldwide effort to Free the 5 for this important achievement. For years Uni\u00f3n de Barrio has participated in this global campaign, and we identify this victory for the Cuban people as our own victory as well.<\/p>\n

While we recognize the release of Gerardo, Ram\u00f3n, and Antonio as an important political step forward, we urge our members and supporters to keep in mind that the changes announced today by Barack Obama represent only an easing of the ongoing blockade of Cuba. What is being celebrated in the U.S. media as a so-called \u201cnormalization\u201d of relations between the U.S. and Cuba is very similar to what William Clinton attempted during his presidency in the 1990s. That process of feigned normalization ended with the imposition of the 1996 Helms-Burton Act, signed by Clinton, which resulted in a tightening of the illegal blockade by the U.S. against Cuba. Almost 20 years later, Helms-Burton can only be revoked by the incoming ultra-right wing congress. In other words, there is absolutely no chance of the U.S. ending its illegal blockade of Cuba in the near future. In fact, as a consequence of today\u2019s \u201cexecutive action\u201d by Obama, it is far more likely that republican majorities in the U.S. congress will increase legislative aggression against Cuba, in the same way the reactionary and hypocritical outgoing U.S. congress recently sanctioned Venezuela for \u201cviolations of human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uni\u00f3n del Barrio knows that the Cuban people are not fooled by Obama\u2019s false promises. We also note that President Ra\u00fal Castro made his statement today while wearing his military uniform, demonstrating to the Cuban people and to the world that the illegal U.S. blockade of Cuba remains in effect, and that this policy is identified by international law as an act of war. Even the most basic review of U.S. policy towards Cuba serves as evidence that we should maintain no illusions about trusting a completely untrustworthy compulsive liar such as Barack Obama. As Mexicanas and Mexicanos who have suffered over 2 million deportations under this president, our communities have learned the hard way to no longer waste our time with hollow speeches and false hopes.<\/p>\n

We understand that if indeed there is any possibility of change in U.S. policy towards Cuba, it will develop as a result of pressure coming from U.S. economic interests, particularly U.S. corporations backed by Cuban-American interests based in Miami. These forces are more interested than ever in investing in Cuba, and this economic self-interest is what is truly motivating Obama and his ilk. For years now, these forces have lamented the money they have \u201clost\u201d as a consequence of the 55 year old blockade of Cuba.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, Uni\u00f3n del Barrio openly and unconditionally supports \u201cCuba libre y socialista,\u201d and if the U.S. ruling class is willing to halt its aggression against revolutionary Cuba, then we truly have reason to celebrate. Short of that, we know now as we always have known, that we should trust no imperialist, even when he is in black-face, and finds it far too easy to quote Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed.<\/p>\n

Uni\u00f3n del Barrio celebra la reciente liberaci\u00f3n a Cuba de Gerardo Hern\u00e1ndez, Ram\u00f3n Labani\u00f1o y Antonio Guerrero – los \u00faltimos tres de los cinco cubanos que estuvieron presos en las c\u00e1rceles de los Estados Unidos desde 1998 por sus esfuerzos en contra del terrorismo y en defensa de la soberan\u00eda de Cuba. M\u00e1s all\u00e1 felicitamos a Los 5 Cubanos y al esfuerzo internacional por tan importante logro. Por mucho a\u00f1os Uni\u00f3n del Barrio ha participado en esta campa\u00f1a global y por eso abrazamos esta victoria como nuestra.<\/p>\n

Aun cuando reconocemos la liberaci\u00f3n de Gerardo, Ram\u00f3n y Antonio como un paso pol\u00edticamente importante, les recordamos a nuestra militancia y nuestros aliados la importancia de tener en cuenta que el anuncio de hoy por Barack Obama solo busca suavizar el bloqueo que a\u00fan existe. Lo que hoy se celebra como la \u201cnormalizaci\u00f3n\u201d de las relaciones entre EEUU y Cuba es similar a lo que intent\u00f3 William Clinton durante su presidencia en los 1990\u2019s. Ese proceso de fingida normalizaci\u00f3n concluy\u00f3 con la imposici\u00f3n del Acta Helms-Burton en 1996, firmada por Clinton, lo que result\u00f3 en agudizar los delineamientos del bloqueo ilegal de EEUU contra Cuba. Despu\u00e9s de 20 a\u00f1os, Helms-Burton solo puede ser revocado por el congreso ultra conservador entrante. En pocas palabras, no hay posibilidad de que EEUU termine el bloqueo ilegal en contra de Cuba en un futuro pr\u00f3ximo. Es m\u00e1s factible que como consecuencia del pronunciamiento por Obama de hoy el congreso entrante con una mayor\u00eda republicana incremente su legislaci\u00f3n agresiva en contra Cuba, de la misma forma que el actual congreso de manera hip\u00f3crita recientemente sancion\u00f3 a Venezuela por supuestas violaciones a los \u201cDerechos Humanos\u201d.<\/p>\n

Uni\u00f3n del Barrio sabe que el pueblo cubano no ser\u00e1 enga\u00f1ado por las falsas promesas de Obama. Sabemos tambi\u00e9n que el presidente Ra\u00fal Castrmand\u00f3do su mensaje esta ma\u00f1ana vistiendo de uniforme militar, mostr\u00e1ndole a su pueblo y al mundo que el bloqueo ilegal aun existe y que esta pol\u00edtica ha sido identificada por la ley internacional como un acto de guerra. Aun el m\u00e1s b\u00e1sico an\u00e1lisis de la pol\u00edtica de EEUU hacia Cuba sirve como evidencia y nos indica que no podemos confiar ni hacernos ilusiones con un compulsivo mentiroso como lo es Barack Obama. Como pueblo Mexicano hemos sufrido las consecuencias de la m\u00e1s de dos millones de deportaciones bajo el mandato de este presidente, y nuestras comunidades han aprendido a no perder el tiempo con discursos vac\u00edos y falsas esperanzas.<\/p>\n

Entendemos que si en realidad hay una posibilidad de cambio en la pol\u00edtica hacia Cuba esto se desarrollar\u00e1 como resultado del inter\u00e9s econ\u00f3mico de EEUU, muy en particular de las corporaciones de EEUU apoyadas por el inter\u00e9s Cubano-Americano con su base en Miami. Estas fuerzas est\u00e1n hoym\u00e1ss que nunca interesadas en invertir en Cuba, y este es el inter\u00e9s que realmente motiva a Obama y sus allegados. Por muchos a\u00f1os estas fuerzas han lamentado el dinero \u201cperdido\u201d como consecuencia de los 55 a\u00f1os de bloqueo.<\/p>\n

Uni\u00f3n del Barrio abiertamente y sin condici\u00f3n apoya a Cuba libre y socialista, y si existe dentro de la clase dominante norteamericana que realmente est\u00e9 dispuesta a cesar su agresi\u00f3n contra el pueblo Cubano, entonces si podemos celebrar. Menos que eso sabemos lo que siempre hemos sabido no confiar en el imperialismo, ni siquiera cuando se presenta en una cara negra y se le hace tan f\u00e1cil invocar a Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed.<\/p>\n
