Beginning in 2004, La Marcha de Zapata was organized by UdB/ Somos Raza in San Diego in unity with local MEChAs (SDSU MEChA has historically played a central role) and with other youth oriented groups. The goal is to pay respect to the memory and legacy of struggle of General Emiliano Zapata who was killed by vendidos in Mexico on April 10, 1919. The Marcha serves to build unity among the different groups with the goal of building unity within a “movement of raza youth”. Since 2017 the plan is to convene a “Conferencia de Zapata” instead of a Marcha, in order to focus more on building unity and historical consciousness among barrio youth.
