History is Ours, and it is the People Who Make It – ¡Hasta la Victoria Siempre!

December 31, 2020

To the General Membership of Unión del Barrio, and to our Friends

Once again, we close another year. We must recognize that 2020 brought new and difficult challenges. Not only for Unión del Barrio but to all of humanity: Covid-19 began to engulf the planet during the twilight of 2019. At first, capitalism and its largest corporations contemplated the virus with joy. They scoffed that the virus had started in China – a country that they hated for looking to dominate them economically. But their merriment began to cloud as we moved into 2020, and the virus spread across the globe.

As a consequence of the mismanaged pandemic, peoples who live under capitalist rulers’ governance suffer the highest and most tragic consequences of the virus. Nonetheless, COVID-19 infections and deaths are highest among the world’s working class. As proof, you just have to see our beloved Mexico, just to the other side of the imposed border wall, where on average there is one death for every 10 infections.

Unión del Barrio continues to face this challenge in an extraordinary way. It can be said that 10 months after we began to suffer the attacks of this new enemy, we have been able to overcome every obstacle that was put in our way. And clearly there have there been many obstacles! Our membership has demonstrated solidarity and creativity, always ready to respond to the needs of the community.

History is ours, and it is the people who make it. Unión del Barrio can continue to make history despite Trumpista fascism, which even now refuses to leave the White House. We struggle despite Trump and despite the virus. We have continued to fight and to expose injustice while we continue to maintain our ideological consistency while on the streets. We have continued to defend our peoples… and we have continued to make history.

The Central Committee sends greetings to each member of Unión del Barrio, and we wish you the best for 2021. We send special recognition to the mujeres of Unión, who have always been on the front lines of the struggle. We greet our youngest members, who study or work, or who do both. We also greet those who are no longer too young, but whose hearts continue to favor the struggle of oppressed and colonized people.
We also greet our friends and allies who have accompanied us during this difficult journey- at the same time, it is beautiful to travel these paths of struggle with all of you. The cruelty of social distancing vindicates the importance of collective organization and what it means to be a people who struggle for a better tomorrow.

May you all have a revolutionary 2021!

¡Hasta la Victoria Siempre!
